About
Fowey is a port town at the mouth of the River Fowey on the south side of Cornwall. The town has been in existence since well before the Norman invasion, with the local church first established some time in the 7th century; the estuary of the River Fowey forms a natural harbour which enabled the town to become an important trading centre. Privateers also made use of the sheltered harbourage. The Lostwithiel and Fowey Railway brought China clay here for export.
Fowey is very popular with the sailing community and is still vistied by cruise ships as a result of its deep natural harbour.
The surrounding coastline of Fowey is vdery popular with fishermen. The River Fowey is a great location for kayaking and paddleboarding. On a rising tide you can paddle all the way up to Lostwithiel.
The Royal Fowey Yacht Club is based on the harbour front. A Pilot Gig Rowing Club races in and around Cornwall, with an event at Fowey being held the same week as the Regatta. The club launches from Caffa Mill slip.
